Joseph Pilates, a German carpenter and gymnast, invented and devised it as an exercise system in England to rehabilitate wounded dancers and soldiers. He upheld the belief in connection between physical and mental health, and found a studio in New York after immigrating to the US in the 1920s. Such exercise methodology was originally called Contrology.
Pilates is an effective low-impact exercise designed to optimize muscular strength, postural alignment and flexibility, which tends to focus on the core despite its comprehensive functions to other parts of the body. It also carries a less risk of injury than other more intense workouts, as well as an emphasis on mind-body linkage of which mindful awareness of breathing and movement is essential.
The two basic forms of Pilates are:
- Mat-based Pilates – this is a series of exercises performed on the floor using gravity and your own body weight to provide resistance. The main aim is to condition the deeper, supporting muscles of your body to improve posture, balance and coordination
- Equipment-based Pilates – this includes specific equipment that works against spring-loaded resistance, including the ‘reformer’, which is a moveable carriage that you push and pull along its tracks. Some forms of Pilates include weights (such as dumbbells) and other types of small equipment that offer resistance to the muscles.

How can Pilates help to improve work efficiency?
Higher productivity with less hold back, just as simple as that!
The human body is not meant to sit that much and long, as we can tell from the stiffness of joints after prolonged static working positions. Not only are muscles underused, but we also inactivate our musculoskeletal system from producing its desired effects, all of which leads to poor posture and impedes flexibility. Symptoms such as headaches, back pain, wrist and hand ache, and stiff shoulders won’t go away even after leaving our desks.
The key to Pilates is loosening up stiff joints and improving their range of motion and control. Purpose-built exercises help strengthen the deep core muscles to support the spine and pelvis for better posture, such that office workers will be able to consciously and properly use the right muscles to well-support the body at desks.
Not at all, anyone can begin the journey at any time! O:RIN welcomes students at all levels. Your goal is our goal; we love to personalize exercise system based on your personal wants and needs.
According to research, exercises help relieve varicose veins, back pain and some other issues that pregnant women commonly suffer from. Moderate exercise is said to help maintain physical fitness to better fulfil the demand for birth giving and motherhood. Be sure to seek your doctor’s opinion before enrolment, and consider a private class to exercise at ease.
